The population of your villages is divided into two parts. On the one hand the inhabitants due to buildings which show up e.g. in the statistics or on the map and on the other hand the inhabitants you gain by training troops. If you want to rise in the statistics you need to build buildings. The maximum of your population due to buildings is shown via the numbers behind this symbol: current/maximum on the right site under the button menu.
